THINGS YOU WILL NEED

Q Do I need a motorcycle licence?  What about an international drivers permit (IDP)?

A Yes & Yes.

You will need to hold a motorcycle licence and IDP issued in your country of residence. You will need to get the IDP before you travel to Japan.

Japan is an outlier in that it requires people with overseas licenses to hold a current motorcycle license even for scooters under 125cc. Holders of a Japan drivers licence (car) are allowed to ride scooters.

They take licences very seriously in Japan and the penalties for being on a road without the correct licence are very steep. It is of no importance to the Japan police what the rules are in your country or what is required in the rest of the world.

Q Do I need to speak Japanese?

A No.

You can get by without any language ability. But you will find it is very rewarding to learn a few key phrases before you travel. Don’t bother trying to learn to read or write. It takes 12 years for a native Japanese child to become literate. You can use Google translate to read signs and labels.

Q Should I have Travel Insurance?

A Yes. You will need to provide proof of this before you start the trip.

This is mandatory. Japanese citizens get subsidised healthcare. Foreigners do not. A visit to a hospital for even a small injury or mild illness can quickly become financially ruinous. Travel insurance will give you peace of mind and allow you to enjoy your holiday. When buying your travel insurance make sure you will be covered for small motorcycle riding. For Aussies and Kiwis we recommend COVERMORE.

Q What do I need to bring?

A All of the following....

1 Motorcycle license from your country.

2 IDP issued in your country with the motorcycle endorsement.

3 Helmet. Full face open face....its your choice.

4 Wet weather gear. You will get wet at some point.

6 Smart phone. This will be your lifeline as it will have your navigation software with our route programmed. Google translate will become your new best friend.

7 Suitable footwear. Don't ride in crocs or flip flops.

8 Any medication you regularly need to get you through the day. The pharmacies in japan will make your head spin with the endless choice of consumer drugs and cosmetics. Your favorite brand of headache/stomachache pills will almost certainly not be available and it will wreck your brain trying to figure out a local brand substitute.

9 Calimoto. This is the best moto touring software.

10 A sense of humour.
